Shoulder Crunch Sweep

Sweep · Closed Guard

A sumi gaeshi style sweep from the shoulder crunch: you roll him over the arm he cannot post. It comes when you hold the shoulder crunch and he pushes his weight back into you on the trapped-arm side. First lift toward the other side so he resists back into you. Open the guard and put the instep of the leg on the trapped-arm side inside his thigh as a hook, the other foot on the mat or as a second hook. Fall to the trapped-arm side, lift his thigh with the hook and pull his head and body over you with the crunch; keep the elbow high so he cannot bring the arm down to post. He rolls over the trapped shoulder and you follow up on top to mount or a passing position. Letting the elbow drop lets him post and stop the roll. If he sits his hips back, come up for the single leg; if he pulls the arm out bent, catch the kimura.

How to do it

  1. From closed guard with his posture broken, he posts a hand past your head. Lace your arm on that side around his upper arm high, elbow deep, lock your hands and put your head beside his: the shoulder crunch.
  2. Lift him first toward the side away from the trapped arm so he pushes back into you.
  3. As he pushes back, open the guard and put the instep of the leg on the trapped-arm side inside his thigh as a hook; the other foot posts on the mat or hooks the other thigh.
  4. Fall to the trapped-arm side, lift his thigh with the hook and pull his head and body over you with the crunch.
  5. Keep the elbow high the whole time so he cannot bring the arm down to post; he rolls over the trapped shoulder.
  6. Follow him over and come up on top to mount or a passing position.

Key details

  • Sweep toward the trapped arm: that is the side where he has no post.
  • Elbow deep, no space between your elbow and your head; a loose lace lets the arm slip back.
  • Your head goes beside his, not under it, or he drives you flat.
  • Use his reaction: lift one way first, sweep the way he pushes back.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping the elbow during the roll. — He frees the arm, posts on the mat and stops the sweep. — Keep the elbow high and tight to your head until he is over.
  • Trying it when the arm is bent at his side. — There is nothing to lace; the crunch needs an extended arm. — Wait for or draw out the posted hand past your head.
  • Falling flat on your back. — The hook cannot lift him and he stays on top. — Fall onto your side toward the trapped arm and lift with the hook.

How to drill it

Partner posts a hand past your head; take the shoulder crunch, lift one way, the partner pushes back, sweep the other way. 6 reps each side, then the partner sits back or pulls the arm so you switch to the single leg or the kimura.
