Spinning Armbar

Submission · Butterfly Guard

An armbar: his straight arm is hyperextended at the elbow across your hips, entered by spinning on your back. In butterfly guard you threaten the sweep, he sits back and posts a straight arm on you to stop it, and that posted arm is the target. Grab it at the wrist and the elbow, locking your hands just above his elbow before you turn, so the arm stays with you. Drop to your back and spin under the arm, close to him, with your hips tight to his side. Swing your leg over his face before you lift, so he cannot raise his head and pull the arm out. Hold the wrist to your chest thumb up, squeeze your knees and lift the hips slowly. If he pulls the arm out, take the triangle; if he stacks you, finish with the belly-down armbar.

How to do it

  1. Threaten the sweep first: they lean back and post a straight arm on you to stop it.
  2. Grab the arm at the wrist and just above the elbow before you turn, so the arm stays with you.
  3. Drop to your back and spin under the arm, close to them, your hips tight to their side.
  4. Swing your leg over their face before you lift, so their head cannot come up and pull the arm out.
  5. Hold the wrist to your chest, thumb up, knees squeezed together, and lift the hips slowly until the tap.

Key details

  • Grip first: the arm must stay with you in the spin.
  • Spin on your back, close to them; far away, the leg cannot reach over the face.
  • Leg over the face before you lift the hips.
  • A posted straight arm is their answer to the sweep threat, so threaten the sweep to get it.
  • If they start to stand and lift you to slam out, do not hang on the arm: keep it locked, push on their near leg, hook the far leg, pull your head toward their crotch and roll them over, then finish on top.

Common mistakes

  • Spinning without the grip. — The arm leaves and you are on your back. — Hold wrist and elbow before you spin.
  • Spinning far from them. — The leg cannot reach over the face. — Keep your hips tight to their side.
  • Lifting fast. — The elbow breaks before the tap. — Lift slowly and wait for the tap.

How to drill it

Partner posts a straight arm, 6 slow spins each side.

Safety

The elbow bends backwards: lift slowly and release at the tap.
