Belly-Down Armbar

Chain finish · Closed Guard

The answer to a stacked armbar: you turn to your belly and still hyperextend the elbow. It comes when they stack you onto your shoulders in the armbar and start pulling the elbow out. Keep the arm hugged to your chest with both arms and the knees pinched on it, and turn to your belly toward their legs without any gap, angling slightly toward the trapped arm. Your leg stays heavy across their head and face so they cannot sit up. Then lift your hips into the elbow, the arm still glued to your chest: the hips break the joint, not the arms. If they step over the head, switch to the kimura; if they pull the elbow out, take the back. Lift slowly and release at the tap.

How to do it

  1. In the armbar they stack you onto your shoulders and start to pull the elbow out.
  2. Keep the arm hugged to your chest with both arms and the knees pinched on it.
  3. Turn to your belly towards their legs without letting go of the arm, angling slightly toward the trapped arm to close the space.
  4. Keep your leg heavy across their head and face so they cannot sit up out of it.
  5. Lift your hips into the elbow slowly, the arm still hugged to your chest, until the tap.

Key details

  • The arm stays glued to you as you turn: any gap and they pull the elbow out.
  • Leg over the head keeps them down; keep it heavy across the face so they cannot sit up.
  • Hips lift into the elbow: the hips break the joint, not the arms.
  • Angle slightly toward the trapped arm to close the space.
  • Belly down, face their feet and put your near shoulder on the mat: facing their head you cannot roll with them if they roll over.

Common mistakes

  • Letting go of the arm to turn. — As soon as you let go they pull the arm out. — Hug it the whole time.
  • Leg slides off the head. — They sit up and escape. — Heavy leg on the head.
  • Lifting the hips fast. — A fast lift of the hips breaks the elbow before they can tap. — Lift slowly, wait for the tap.

How to drill it

Partner stacks in the armbar, you roll to your belly, 6 slow reps each side.

Safety

The elbow bends backwards: lift slowly and release at the tap.
