Butterfly to Deep Half

Transition · Butterfly Guard

From butterfly guard, when he drives his hips down and pins your hooks to the mat, this takes you under him into deep half guard. Keep the underhook and drop under him quickly, before he settles his weight. Go all the way under his hips, hug his near leg with both arms tight to your chest and put your head against his hip on the inside, where his weight cannot crush your neck; your legs trap the same leg. Staying half out lets him flatten you and pass, and a head outside the hip gets crushed. If he sits back, go to the deep half sweep; if he steps over your body, the waiter sweep.

How to do it

  1. When they flatten your hooks, keep the underhook and drop under them quickly, before they settle their weight.
  2. Go all the way under their hips and hug the near leg with both arms.
  3. Put your head against their hip on the inside, where their weight cannot crush your neck.
  4. Settle into deep half guard, the leg hugged tight to your chest.
