Knee Push Sweep

Sweep · Butterfly Guard

From butterfly guard you push the opponent over backward and come up on top. Set up on one knee with a butterfly hook from the other foot tight inside his thigh, an arm around his back gripping the belt, head below his chin, and your free hand on his pants at the knee on the other side. Pull him slightly toward you with the belt grip: he sits back to resist, and that is the moment. Go with him: push the knee with the pants grip, lift with the hook and come up on top as he falls back. The detail beginners miss is the head below his chin; above it he pushes your head and knocks you over. If he leans forward instead, use the Butterfly Sweep; if he posts a hand, the Arm Drag to Back.

How to do it

  1. Put one knee on the mat and set a butterfly hook with the other foot, tight inside their thigh.
  2. Wrap an arm around their back and grab the belt; keep your head below their chin.
  3. Grip their pants at the knee on the other side with your free hand, so you can push that knee when they move back.
  4. Pull them slightly toward you with the belt grip: they sit back to resist.
  5. Go with their move back: push the knee with the pants grip, lift with the hook and come up on top as they fall back.

Key details

  • Head below their chin: above it, they push your head and knock you over.
  • Their sitting back is the momentum of the sweep; pull first and wait for it.
  • Keep the hooking foot active and tight to them, so it can lift the leg the moment they sit back.
  • It works against bigger opponents because they supply the force.
  • As they sit back, straighten your hooking leg a little to make space, then curl that knee back in and come up so your knee lands on top of their leg.

Common mistakes

  • Head above their chin. — They push your head and knock you over. — Keep the head low, under the chin.
  • Sweeping before they react. — Their base is still solid. — Pull first and wait for them to sit back.
  • A loose hook. — Nothing lifts their leg, so they keep their base. — Keep the hook tight inside the thigh.

How to drill it

Partner sits back on your pull, 8 sweeps each side.
