Armbar from Mount

Submission · Mount

An elbow lock: the straight arm is bent backward over your hips. From high mount, when he frames with straight arms on your chest, climb your knees under his armpits so his arms are pushed up above his shoulders. Hug one arm to your chest with both arms, pivot on your knee, put your foot by his head and swing the other leg over his face, pinching the arm between your knees through the swing. Sit close, hips tight against his shoulder, thumb pointing up, and lift your hips into the back of the elbow while holding the wrist to your chest. Space between your hips and his shoulder lets the elbow slip. If he bends the arm, switch to the triangle from mount. Lower yourself with control and extend slowly.

How to do it

  1. Climb high in mount, knees under their armpits, so their arms are pushed up and isolated above their shoulders.
  2. Trap one arm on your chest, hugging it with both arms so the elbow cannot slide out.
  3. Pivot on your knee, put your foot by their head and swing the other leg over, pinching the trapped arm between your knees during the swing.
  4. Sit close to their shoulder, hips tight against it, with the knees pinched on the arm and the thumb pointing up.
  5. Hold the wrist to your chest and lift the hips: your hips push up against the back of the elbow and extend it.

Key details

  • High mount first, so the arms are isolated and the pivot happens above their arms.
  • Sit close: space between your hips and their shoulder lets the elbow slip.
  • Pinch the knees on the arm as you swing, so the arm stays trapped while you change position.
  • Thumb up means the elbow faces your hips, so lifting the hips bends the joint the wrong way.
  • If his elbows stay tight to his ribs, ratchet one out: wrist under his elbow, walk your hand out along the mat leading with the thumb, head over his head; the friction of your palm on the mat stops the elbow from coming back.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging from a low mount. — With your weight over their hips, they bridge as you pivot. — Climb to high mount first, so the pivot happens above their arms.
  • Falling back far from the shoulder. — Space between your hips and their shoulder lets the elbow slide out. — Keep your hips tight against their shoulder as you sit back.
  • Knees open during the swing. — Open knees leave the arm free to slip out during the swing. — Pinch the arm between your knees before and during the swing.
  • Swinging the leg over the head while sitting upright, or sitting down before the leg is over. — Upright, the leg is heavy and the swing is clumsy; sitting down early takes your weight off him and he hides the arm. — Lean forward until your ear touches his side so the leg goes light, swing it over, and only then sit back.

If they defend

  • They turn into you. → Finish from the belly-down position.
  • They bend the arm. → The bent arm and the head are between your legs: triangle.

How to drill it

Mount to armbar and back to mount, 8 each side; then the partner defends by bending the arm.

Safety

Lower yourself with control and lift the hips slowly.
