Ezekiel Choke
Submission · Mount
A choke with your own sleeves: the blade of your forearm presses the throat, so it squeezes the windpipe as much as the arteries. From low mount it fits when he puts his hands on your chest to push you off: his arms are busy, not guarding the neck. Slide one arm behind his neck from the side, bring the other across in front of his throat and grip four fingers inside its sleeve with the hand behind the neck, locking both arms into one ring. Turn the wrist of the front arm so its bony edge, not the flat side, faces the throat, then drive it toward the mat with your chest low. The arm behind the neck is only the anchor. If he pushes your elbows, take the armbar from mount; if he covers the neck, the americana.
How to do it
- Put one arm behind their neck, sliding it under the head from the side so your forearm lies across the back of their neck.
- Bring your other arm across in front of their throat, so its sleeve opening is within reach of the hand behind the neck.
- Slide the first hand into the other sleeve, gripping inside your own sleeve with four fingers, so your two arms lock into one ring around the neck.
- Rotate the wrist of the front arm so its bony edge, not the flat side, faces the throat.
- Drive the blade of the forearm into the throat toward the mat, staying low with your chest on theirs.
Key details
- Works even from inside their guard in the gi, because it needs only your own sleeves.
- Grip inside your own sleeve: the sleeve grip locks your arms together so the ring cannot open.
- The blade of the forearm presses the throat; the arm behind the neck is only the anchor.
- Rotate your wrist so the bony edge of the forearm digs in, not the flat side.
- Best timing is the moment you arrive in mount: he is busy pushing your knee and freeing his leg, not guarding his neck.
Common mistakes
- Using the soft side of the forearm. — The soft side spreads the pressure over the throat and nothing finishes. — Turn the bony blade of the wrist into the throat.
- Gripping the wrong sleeve. — With the wrong grip the lock opens as soon as you squeeze. — Grip inside your own sleeve so the arms lock together.
- Sitting up to squeeze. — Sitting up takes your weight off them, and the bridge throws you off. — Stay low with your chest on theirs while you choke.
- Only the fingertips inside the sleeve. — The choke loads the fingers: a shallow grip hurts them and you let go before the finish. — Roll the hand in until the sleeve lies on your knuckles, then finish.
