Gift Wrap
Transition · Mount
Pin the crossed arm with your chest, feed your other arm under the head and pass their wrist to it behind the neck. Roll them onto the side with your heel low on their thigh, so the leg cannot kickstand, and take the back.
How to do it
- From high mount, see their arm cross in front of their neck, their wrist near the opposite side of their head.
- Push their wrist behind their head with one hand, in one move, before they pull the arm back to their chest.
- Take it with your other hand from behind the neck, reaching under their head, so their arm is wrapped around their own neck.
- Roll them to the side of the wrapped arm and step behind, keeping the wrist tight.
- Take the back with the arm still wrapped and put your hooks in before you let go.
Key details
- The arm wraps their own neck, so one of your hands controls their arm and head at once.
- Keep the wrist until you are behind and the hooks are in.
- From the gift wrap the back is easy to control, because their wrapped arm cannot defend the choke.
- To roll him over, push his wrapped elbow into his diaphragm, drop your chest behind his shoulder blade and drive off your back leg; repeat if he stops halfway.
Common mistakes
- Passing the wrist slowly. — A slow pass gives them time to pull the arm back to their chest. — Pass it in one move.
- Rolling the wrong way. — Rolling away from the wrapped arm unwinds it from their neck. — Roll toward the wrapped arm.
- Letting go too soon. — Once the arm is free they turn back to face you and recover guard. — Keep it until the hooks are in.
- Sliding up high as soon as he is on his side. — His bottom leg and elbow become a kickstand, and you cannot roll him over. — Keep your heel low on his thigh and his elbow pushed into his body while you roll him.
