Technical Mount

Position · Mount

He turned onto his side under your mount to escape, and you shift with him. One knee stays tight behind his back by his shoulder, the other leg comes up with the foot posted in front of his hip and the knee rising beside his ribs; your chest is on his upper shoulder and your arm controls his neck or arm. Stay light so you can follow his turn, and sag your weight into him as that knee drives in: the sinking weight plus the driving knee drag him into the turn, not just following along. When he turns further away, take the back. He tries to turn back flat and recover a knee in front; keep the knee behind his back pressed in so he cannot roll onto it.

How to do it

  1. From mount, as they turn to their side, follow them instead of fighting the turn, staying light enough to move with them.
  2. Move one knee up behind their head, the other leg in front of their hips, so they are sandwiched between your legs.
  3. Sit your weight on their hip, not on the mat, sagging into them as the knee drives in so they stay on their side.
  4. Control the top arm: hug it or grip the collar, so they cannot push your knee away.
  5. From here take the back, the armbar or go back to mount, depending on which way they turn.

Key details

  • A bridge between mount and the back: it keeps control when mount is lost to the turn.
  • Your weight on their hip pins them; weight on the mat lets them roll back under you.
  • Follow their turn, do not fight it: the sinking weight plus the driving knee keeps them turned.

Common mistakes

  • Weight on the mat. — They roll back under you to guard. — Sit on their hip.
  • No arm control. — Their top arm is free, so they push your knee and escape. — Hug the top arm.
  • Staying in mount while they turn. — They escape with an elbow-knee. — Switch to technical mount with the turn.

If they defend

  • They turn back flat. → Go back to mount.
  • They turn to their belly. → Take the back with hooks.

How to drill it
