Transition · Turtle

Take an underhook and an overhook, step to the side and roll them onto their back over your hip into a pin.

How to do it

  1. In the front headlock they drive forward into you; do not stop the drive head-on, use it.
  2. Take an underhook on one side, your arm under their armpit, and an overhook on the other, your arm wrapped over their arm and clamping it to your side.
  3. Step to the overhook side: drop that hip and shoulder toward the mat while the underhook lifts their other shoulder.
  4. Roll them over your hip onto their back: their forward drive carries them over, the overhook pulls their arm down, the underhook lifts and turns.
  5. Land chest to chest in side control, keeping both hooks until you are settled.

Key details

  • Use their forward drive: it supplies the weight that rolls them over your hip.
  • Underhook lifts, overhook pulls: the two arms turn their shoulders like a wheel.
  • Chest stays on theirs the whole time, so you land on top and not beside them.

Common mistakes

  • Rolling without their drive. — Without their drive the roll is too heavy. — Wait for the push.
  • Loose hooks. — With loose hooks they slip out of the roll. — Tight underhook and overhook, the overhook clamped to your side.
  • Landing on your back. — They end up on top. — Roll over your hip to the top.

How to drill it
