Go-Behind

Transition · Turtle

Snap the head down, circle to their side and come behind them.

How to do it

  1. From the front headlock, keep your weight on the back of their head, your hips back and low, so their head stays below yours.
  2. When they sprawl the hips back, snap the head down to the mat with the hand on the back of the head, so their weight falls onto their hands.
  3. Post your free hand, not the one on the head, on the triceps of their arm on the side you will circle to, then slide your forearm behind it, so they cannot post that arm and turn in to you.
  4. Circle to their side with short steps of your feet, chest tight to their shoulder and one hand still heavy on the back of the head.
  5. Come behind them, put your chest on their back and lock the seatbelt: one arm over the shoulder, the other under the arm, hands clasped on their chest.

Key details

  • Their head stays below yours the whole time: with the head down they cannot stand up or shoot.
  • Move your feet around them, not your arms: the hands keep the head and the arm pinned while the legs travel.
  • Block the triceps on the side you circle to with your forearm, so they cannot turn in to you as you reach their side.

Common mistakes

  • Circling with your weight off the head. — They lift the head, face you and shoot a leg. — Keep one hand heavy on the back of the head as you walk.
  • Circling too wide. — The space between you lets them sit up and turn. — Stay chest-to-shoulder close all the way around.
  • No control of the far arm. — They post it and turn in as you reach the side. — Grab the triceps before you step behind.
  • Reaching around the waist too early. — Before you are behind him he clamps your wrist to his body, rolls through and pins you. — Keep the second arm down his spine while you circle; take the waist only once you are behind.

How to drill it
