Japanese Necktie

Submission · Turtle

A front-headlock choke that also loads the neck: your arm loops his neck and near arm together, and your chest drives his head down into the loop. The moment is when he posts the near arm with the head low. Keep your weight on the back of his head, thread your arm under his neck and under the near arm until the wrist comes out past the far side, and grab your own wrist over his back. Trap his near leg with your leg so he cannot turn into you or stand, drop to your side toward his near shoulder, and drive your chest into the back of his head. The arms only hold; the chest makes the choke. If he pulls the head out, switch to the D'Arce; if he turns into you, take the back. Apply the pressure slowly and release at the tap.

How to do it

  1. From the front headlock, they post the near arm with the head low; keep your weight on the back of their head so it stays down.
  2. Thread your arm under the neck and under the near arm, deep, until your wrist comes out past the far side.
  3. Reach over their back with your other hand and grab your own wrist, closing the loop around the neck and the arm.
  4. Trap their near leg with your leg so they cannot turn into you or stand, then drop to your side towards their near shoulder.
  5. Drive your chest into the back of their head, slowly: the head is pressed down into your arm under the neck and the choke closes. Stop at the tap.

Key details

  • The neck and the near arm are both inside your arm: the trapped arm fills the loop so it closes on the neck.
  • Chest pressure makes the choke: the arms only hold the loop, your chest pushes the head into it.
  • Go slowly: the pressure on the back of the head also loads the neck.
  • Trap their near leg with yours so they cannot turn into you or stand while you finish.
  • Fall over his head, not just beside it, keep his bottom leg hooked so he cannot come up to his knees, and scoot your hips down to the mat as you pull.

Common mistakes

  • A loose arm under the neck. — A loose arm gives pressure but no choke. — Thread deep, the wrist past the far side.
  • Falling to the wrong side. — Falling the wrong way opens your grip. — Fall towards their near shoulder.
  • Slamming the chest down. — A sudden drop of the chest cranks the neck. — Add the pressure slowly.

How to drill it

From front headlock, 6 slow entries each side; stop before pressure.

Safety

It chokes and loads the neck: apply pressure slowly and release at the tap.
