Cow Catcher

Transition · Turtle

A catch-wrestling turnover from the front headlock: your arms trap his head and one arm together, and you turn him onto his back into a pin. The moment is when the arm you hold at the elbow leaves his ribs. Keep the chin strap with one arm; slide the other arm under his far arm, the one you were holding, and sink it deep to the armpit. Step up the leg on the same side as the underhook, clamp the head down with the chin-strap arm and lock your hands. Stay heavy on his head and drive at an angle, turning him over onto his back so you land chest to chest with head and arm still locked, then settle into side control. A shallow underhook lets the arm slip out mid-roll. If he pulls the arm out, the chin strap is left: guillotine; if he posts to stop the turn, roll him the other way with the cement mixer.

How to do it

  1. From the front headlock, keep the chin strap with one arm and your weight on his head.
  2. When his elbow leaves his ribs, slide your other arm under that arm and sink it deep to the armpit.
  3. Step up the leg on the side of the underhook and clamp the head down with the chin-strap arm.
  4. Lock your hands so his head and arm are trapped together.
  5. Drive at an angle and turn him over onto his back, landing chest to chest with the lock still on; then settle into side control.

Key details

  • A deep underhook, up to the armpit: the arm is the handle you turn him with.
  • Stay heavy on the head the whole time, so he cannot lift it and come up.
  • Keep the lock until you are settled on top: let go early and he turns back to his knees.

Common mistakes

  • A shallow underhook. — The arm slips out during the turn. — Sink the arm to the armpit before you turn.
  • Turning without stepping up. — There is no angle and he just posts. — Step up on the underhook side first.
  • Lifting the chest off his head. — He raises the head and squares up. — Keep your weight on the head until he is over.
