Chilean Necktie

Submission · Turtle

A gi choke on the turtle with your own lapel; details of the finish vary between coaches. The moment is when he stays turtled with both hands guarding his neck: the collar is covered, but the space under his arm is open. Open your gi, feed your lapel under his arm to the neck and take it with your other hand. Stay heavy on him so he cannot turn back into you, then bring a leg over him and push him away with the leg while you hold the lapel — the stretch, not the arms, makes the choke. Light on top and he turns in before the lapel is tight. If he grabs your lapel, switch to his collar for the bow and arrow; if he rolls to his back, take the collar choke from side control.

How to do it

  1. At the side of the turtle, when he keeps both hands at his neck, open your gi and pull out the lapel.
  2. Feed the lapel under his arm to his neck.
  3. Take the lapel with your other hand; stay heavy on him.
  4. Bring a leg over him so he cannot roll or turn in.
  5. Push him away with the leg while holding the lapel; tighten slowly.

Key details

  • Under the arm: his hands guard the collar, the space under the arm is open.
  • Weight on him first, so he cannot turn back into you.
  • The leg stretches him away from the lapel; the arms only hold.

Common mistakes

  • Feeding the lapel over the arm. — His hands strip it at once. — Go under the arm.
  • Light on top while feeding the lapel. — He turns into you and the angle is gone. — Keep your weight on him until the leg is over.
  • Pulling with the arms only. — The lapel tightens slowly and he defends. — Push him away with the leg as you hold.

How to drill it

Partner turtled, hands at the neck: 6 slow lapel feeds each side; stop before pressure.

Safety

Tighten slowly and release at the tap; push with the leg gently, not with a kick.
