Collar Choke from Side Control

Submission · Side Control

A collar choke: as you lean back, your forearm and his collar close around his neck. It comes when he turns his head toward you in side control. Open his collar with your near hand and feed your far hand in deep, thumb inside, the knuckles sliding behind his neck; the depth of this grip is the whole choke, so set it before anything else. Only then step your leg over his head: it stops him turning in and keeps his face away from the choking side. Sit back toward his far side so your body weight, not your arm, takes up the slack, and lean back slowly until the tap. If he grabs your choking wrist, take the armbar; if he turns away, take the back.

How to do it

  1. When they turn their head towards you, open their collar with your near hand, pulling it away from the neck so the far hand can feed in.
  2. Feed a deep collar grip with your far hand, thumb inside, sliding it behind the neck. A deep grip is the whole choke, so set it before you move anything else.
  3. Only once the grip is deep, step your leg over their head. The leg over the head stops them turning in towards you.
  4. Sit back towards their far side, so your body, not your arm, takes up the slack in the collar.
  5. Pull the collar tight across the neck slowly by leaning back until the tap.

Key details

  • A deep grip is the whole choke. With the knuckles behind the neck the collar closes like a loop; a shallow grip only pulls the gi.
  • Your leg over the head stops them turning in. It keeps their head facing away from the side you choke on.
  • Sit back, do not pull with the arm alone. Your body weight is steady and closes the collar without tiring the arm.

Common mistakes

  • A shallow collar grip. — It only pulls the gi and does not choke. — Feed the grip deep behind the neck.
  • Stepping over the head too early. — Without the grip set they escape the hips and recover guard. — Grip first, then step over.
  • Pulling with the arm only. — The arm tires and the choke stays loose. — Use your body to sit back.

How to drill it

From side control, 6 slow entries each side, stop at the first pressure.

Safety

A choke: squeeze slowly and release at the tap.
