Outside Trip
Takedown · Standing
Kosoto gake takes you from the underhook clinch to side control by hooking their near leg from the outside. Use it when their weight is on the leg beside you. Push them toward their rear corner so they stand rigid on that heel, step your foot beside theirs hip to hip, and hook the back of their outer ankle with the sole of your foot. Drive your chest diagonally back over that heel while the hook scoops the ankle forward: the leg goes forward, the body back, and they have nothing to step with. Driving straight back lets them step back with the other leg. Land chest to chest. If they lift the hooked leg, take a single; if they push back into you, use the inside trip.
How to do it
- In the clinch, push them so their weight goes onto the leg beside you, breaking their balance to their rear corner so they stand rigid on that heel.
- Close the distance and step your foot beside theirs, hip to hip.
- Hook the back of their near leg with your leg from the outside, the sole of your foot behind their outer ankle.
- Drive your chest diagonally back over their heel as you pull the hook forward and scoop the ankle up: the leg goes forward while the body goes back, so they cannot step.
- Land chest on chest on top, keeping your weight on them so they cannot scramble to guard, and take side control.
Key details
- Weight on the hooked leg first: a loaded leg cannot be lifted out of the hook.
- Chest drives diagonally back over the heel, not straight back: straight back they simply step back with the other leg.
- Stay tight, hip to hip: from far away you lose your own balance on one leg.
- Hook the back of their outer ankle with the sole and scoop it up.
- Break the balance to their rear corner so they stand rigid on that heel.
- From a body lock the outside trip is a block rather than a scoop: your knee tucks behind their knee, toes on the mat, your head drives into their chest while the locked hands pull their hips in toward you, so the back bends and the blocked leg cannot step back.
Common mistakes
- Hooking from far away. — Your leg reaches while your body stays behind: you lose balance and they step off. — Close the distance first, hip to hip.
- Pushing straight back. — The push goes between their feet: they step back with the other leg. — Push diagonally over the hooked leg.
- Falling beside them. — Landing beside them lets them scramble to guard. — Keep your chest on them through the fall and land chest on chest.
How to drill it
Clinch hooks 10 each side, then 5 finishes each side on mats.
Safety
The partner falls straight back: they tuck the chin; you do not land on their chest with the full weight.
