Inside Trip

Takedown · Standing

Takes you from the underhook clinch to a top position by hooking a leg from inside their stance. The moment is when they step toward you. With an underhook and an overhook and your hips close, put your leg between theirs and hook the inside of one leg behind the knee with your calf, deep, not with the foot. Lift that leg off the mat and at the same instant drive your chest forward and down at an angle over the hooked leg, where they have no foot to step back onto. A hook without the chest drive only makes them hop. Land with the hips low and pass before they close guard. If they step the hooked leg back, knee tap; if they sprawl the hips back, snap down.

How to do it

  1. Get chest to chest with an underhook and an overhook, your hips close to theirs.
  2. When they step toward you, put your leg between theirs, inside their stance.
  3. Hook the inside of their leg behind the knee with your calf, deep, not with the foot.
  4. Lift the hooked leg off the mat and at the same moment drive your chest forward and down, at an angle over the hooked leg where they have no foot to step back on.
  5. Land on top with your hips low, keep the chest pressure and pass straight away before they can close a guard.

Key details

  • Hips close to theirs: from a distance the hook does not reach and your chest cannot drive.
  • Hook and drive with the upper body at the same moment: a hook alone only lifts a leg, and a trip without the drive lets them step back.
  • Drive at an angle over the hooked leg, where they have no foot to step back on.
  • Your trip leg must end up inside their stance, between their feet; outside it becomes an outside trip.
  • From over-under, trip on your overhook side, the side of his underhook: pull the triceps of his underhook arm so his foot moves, step in and drop. Going to the other side runs into his underhook and he throws you.

Common mistakes

  • Tripping from far away. — Your leg reaches but your chest does not, so they just step over the hook. — Close the distance with the clinch first, chest to chest.
  • Driving straight back. — They step back with the free leg and stay on their feet. — Drive diagonally over the hooked leg, toward the side where they have no support.
  • Hooking with the foot. — A foot slides off the leg and has no strength to lift it. — Hook deep with your calf behind their knee.
  • Sliding the hooking foot along the mat. — The foot drags and slides off their leg instead of lifting it. — Hook with the back of the calf behind the knee and keep that foot off the mat while you reap.

How to drill it

Walk in a clinch with a partner and trip on every third step, both legs, 2 minutes.

Safety

Fall with your partner and keep weight off their chest on landing; they must know how to break the fall.
