Kesa Gatame Escape

Escape · Side Control

Takes you from under kesa gatame to side control on top. The moment is when he sits high by your head with your near arm trapped under his armpit. Turn onto your side toward him and bring your hips in close. Reach the trapped arm around his back and the free arm around the front of his waist, join your hands (or grab his belt) and hug him tight to your chest. Plant your feet and bridge up first, loading his weight onto you, then turn your shoulders over to the far side, rolling him over you, and settle chest to chest. Without the waist grip he posts and slides off. If he switches to reverse kesa, recover guard.

How to do it

  1. Turn onto your side towards them and bring your hips in close; the trapped arm stays under their armpit and reaches around their back.
  2. Wrap the free arm around the front of their waist and join your hands behind them (or grab their belt), hugging them tight to your chest.
  3. Plant your feet and bridge up first, loading their weight on top of you.
  4. Then turn your shoulders over to the far side, rolling them over you; bridge first, turn second, or they stay on top.
  5. Come up on top in side control, chest on their chest, and keep the arm around their waist as you settle.

Key details

  • Hips close before the bridge: from a distance the bridge cannot load their weight onto you.
  • Bridge up first, then turn: the bridge loads their weight on you, the turn of the shoulders rolls them.
  • Waist control before the roll: without it they post and slide off instead of rolling over.

Common mistakes

  • Bridging straight up. — A bridge that only goes up lifts them, but without the turn they come back down on top. — Bridge up to load them, then turn your shoulders to the far side.
  • Pushing on the face. — It wastes energy and opens the arm. — Work the elbow and hip.
  • Lying flat on your back. — Flat on your back, they settle all their weight. — Stay on your side facing them.

How to drill it

Partner in kesa with light pressure, 8 escapes each side. Then 1-minute rounds.
