Back-Door Escape

Escape · Side Control

Takes your head out of kesa gatame and brings you up behind him. Drop the freed elbow to the mat around the outside of his thigh and push it against the thigh, so he cannot pull the arm back. Put your knee against his hip as a fulcrum, tuck your chin and slide your head down and out under his arm; pulling the head straight back runs into his arm. Rock your shoulders up, come out behind him and take the back or come on top. If he pushes you flat again, bridge and roll him: your elbow on his hip now helps.

How to do it

  1. The moment the elbow comes free, drop it to the mat around the outside of their near thigh.
  2. Push the elbow against their thigh and keep it on the mat, so they cannot pull the arm back over the thigh.
  3. Put your knee against their hip as a fulcrum so they cannot follow you.
  4. Tuck your chin and slide your head down and out under their arm, rocking your shoulders up.
  5. Come up behind them and take the back or come on top.

Key details

  • The elbow on the mat is your way out: once it is past their thigh, the pin is broken.
  • The head comes out down and under their arm, not straight back.
  • Knee on their hip: without it they move with your head and keep you pinned.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling the head straight back. — Their arm is in the way and the head stays trapped. — Tuck the chin and slide the head down and out.
  • Leaving the elbow in the air. — They pull the arm back over their thigh and re-trap it. — Keep the elbow on the mat, pushing against the thigh.

If they defend

  • They push you back flat to stop the head coming out. → Bridge and roll them: your elbow on their hip makes it easier.

How to drill it

Partner in kesa lets go of the arm on your bridge; elbow to the mat, head out, take the back. 8 reps each side.
