Frame and Recover Guard

Escape · Side Control

Takes you from under knee-on-belly back to guard. The moment is when he shifts the knee or settles his weight on it. Put one hand under his kneecap and the other on his hip, elbows tight to your ribs so the arms are not exposed to an armbar. Push the knee down off your belly toward your hips while turning to your side: as long as the knee sits on your belly it pins your hips. Then shrimp away off your foot while the frames hold him in place, bring your knee into the gap and square up to guard. If he slides to mount, use the elbow-knee escape; if he stays high on the knee, the technical stand-up is the better exit.

How to do it

  1. Frame on their knee with one hand and on the hip with the other: the hand on the knee is under the kneecap, the hand on the hip blocks their hips, both elbows close to your ribs.
  2. Push the knee off your belly toward your hips while you turn slightly to your side, so the knee slides down and off.
  3. Shrimp your hips away from them, pushing off your foot on the mat, while the frames hold them where they are.
  4. Bring your knee into the space between your frames and their body, then square up and recover guard.

Key details

  • Push the knee off the belly first: as long as it is on your belly, its weight pins your hips and stops the shrimp.
  • Elbows close to the body: tight elbows keep the arms safe from an armbar and keep them from taking the far arm.
  • Turn to your side as you shrimp: on your side the hips can move away and the knee has room to come in.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing the knee with straight arms. — Straight arms on the knee are easy to catch in an armbar. — Keep the elbows close and move the hips.
  • Lying flat on the back. — Flat on your back the hips cannot move away. — Turn to your side so the hips can shrimp.
  • Reacting late. — Once they settle, they attack the arms or move to mount. — Escape the moment the knee lands on your belly.

How to drill it
