Bottom of Knee-on-Belly

Position · Side Control

He has one knee on your stomach or chest, the shin across your belly, and is standing on the other leg, usually holding your collar and far sleeve or belt. Do not stay flat: turn toward him, put both hands or forearms on his knee and hip, and shrimp away to take the knee off your belly. If he shifts the knee, use that moment to frame and bring your knee in for Frame and Recover Guard. If he stays high above you, base on one hand and foot and come up with the Technical Stand-Up. His goals are mount, the far-side armbar when you push with straight arms, and the collar choke; the detail beginners miss is turning onto the side toward him.

How to do it

  1. Turn towards their knee on your belly, onto your side. The knee slides off your belly onto your side and most of their weight drops off you.
  2. Frame on their knee with both hands, arms bent and elbows close to your body, and push the knee away from you.
  3. Shrimp your hips away from the knee: plant your foot and drive your hips back to open space between the knee and your body.
  4. Bring your outside knee into that space and recover guard, keeping your hands on their knee until the guard is set.

Key details

  • Turn in: it takes the weight off. Turning towards the knee makes it slide off your belly onto your side.
  • Push the knee, not the body: the knee is where their weight is, and the body is out of reach for a bent arm.
  • Arms tight: knee on belly is an armbar position, and any straight arm is offered to them.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing their chest with straight arms. — They catch the straight arm for an armbar. — Frame on the knee only, arms bent.
  • Turning away from them. — Your back is open and they take it. — Turn towards them, chest first.
  • Staying flat on your back. — All their weight stays on your belly through the knee. — Get to your side at once.

If they defend

  • They step over to mount. → Block with the knee and recover half guard.
  • They attack the far arm. → Hide the arm and turn in.

How to drill it

Partner holds knee on belly, 3 × 45 seconds: turn in, frame, recover guard.
