Walk-Around Triangle Escape

Escape · Closed Guard

A late triangle escape that ends in side control. Keep the trapped elbow at his hip and hold his hip with that hand so he cannot swing his hips back under your neck; the free hand grips the opposite collar by his neck (no-gi: his shoulder). Stand, walk around toward his head on the side of the choke, driving diagonally toward his knee, not straight into his hamstring. Step over his head and drop that knee to the mat beside it: the knee drop unties the legs. Keep your elbow tight so he cannot switch to an armbar, free the arm and settle in side control. If the squeeze is already tight, tap.

How to do it

  1. Block first: keep the trapped elbow at their hip and hold that hip with the same hand; the free hand grips the opposite collar by their neck (no-gi: the shoulder).
  2. Posture and stand up, keeping the hip blocked so they cannot bring it back under your neck.
  3. Walk around toward their head on the side of the choke, driving diagonally toward their knee rather than straight into the hamstring.
  4. Step over their head and drop that knee to the mat beside it: the knee drop unties the legs.
  5. Keep the elbow tight, free the arm and settle in side control.

Key details

  • The hip block is the escape: their hips must stay off your neck line while you walk.
  • Walk to the side of the choke and drive at an angle toward the knee, never straight into the strength of the legs.
  • Elbow tight to your body throughout: they cannot switch to an armbar.

Common mistakes

  • Walking around without blocking the hip. — They swing the hips back under your neck and the angle comes back. — Hold the hip with the trapped-arm hand the whole time.
  • Driving straight into their legs. — You push into the strength of the hamstring and the legs hold. — Hop around the corner and drive diagonally toward the knee.

How to drill it

Partner locks a loose triangle; block the hip, stand, walk around and drop the knee, 6 reps each side. Tap if it gets tight.

Safety

A locked triangle chokes in seconds: if the squeeze is tight, tap instead of walking.
