Caught in a triangle

Position · Closed Guard

His legs are around your head and one arm, your arm across his body and the other arm outside; the triangle is being set but the lock is not closed yet. Act now: keep your posture up, head high, and get the trapped arm's elbow back inside or the hand to his hip, and do not let him pull your head down. If his legs are not locked yet, stack and posture into the Triangle Defense, freeing the arm before his ankle goes behind his knee. His goals are to angle off, lock the figure-four with his legs and pull your head down. The detail beginners miss is that the other arm must not push into his legs — keep both arms either inside or both out.

How to do it

  1. Posture up at once: head up, back straight, hips forward. Without posture they pull your head down and lock the triangle.
  2. Push the trapped arm across their belly to the other side of their body. A triangle needs one of your arms in and one out; with both arms on the same side of their centre the leg cannot close across your neck.
  3. Keep both elbows inside their legs, tight to your body, so their legs cannot climb higher onto your shoulders.
  4. Step your knee close to their hip, plant your feet and stand up with your back straight.
  5. Stack them: drive your weight forward and down onto their shoulders, so their hips fold over, and pry the legs open.

Key details

  • The first second decides: before the legs lock, posture and arm position stop the triangle; after, they only delay it.
  • Arm in, head up: the trapped arm across their centre and the head high take away the angle of the choke.
  • Tap if it is locked tight: a locked triangle cuts blood flow to the brain within seconds.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling the trapped arm out. — With the arm out, the leg drops across your neck and the triangle closes tighter. — Push the arm across their belly.
  • Letting the head drop. — They lock the triangle and cut the angle. — Posture up right away, head up.
  • Waiting to see if it is tight. — A locked triangle chokes in seconds. — Escape early or tap.

If they defend

  • They lock the legs. → Posture and stack before the angle.
  • They switch to an armbar. → Hands together, thumb down.

How to drill it

Partner sets a loose triangle, 8 escapes each side. Tap early.

Safety
