Triangle Armbar

Chain finish · Closed Guard

An elbow lock from inside a locked triangle: the trapped arm is straightened and hyperextended over your hip bone. The moment is when they posture up in the triangle and the trapped arm straightens. Keep the legs locked so they hold the head and shoulder, grab the trapped wrist with both hands and stop it pulling back inside. Pivot your hips to face that arm, pull it across your body so the elbow sits on your hip, not on your stomach, turn their thumb to the ceiling and lift the hips slowly while pulling the wrist down. If it does not bite, unlock and swing the choking leg over the face. If they bend the arm, go back to the triangle choke; if they clasp their hands, attack the kimura.

How to do it

  1. Keep the triangle locked when they posture up; the legs hold their head and shoulder in place.
  2. As the trapped arm straightens, grab its wrist with both hands and keep it from pulling back inside.
  3. Pivot your hips to face the trapped arm and pull the arm across your body so the elbow sits on your hip, not on your stomach.
  4. Turn their thumb toward the ceiling so the elbow points down at your hip.
  5. Lift your hips slowly into the elbow while pulling the wrist down to extend the arm; if it does not bite, unlock and swing the choking leg over the face.

Key details

  • The legs stay locked: the triangle is what holds them while you work the arm.
  • Their elbow goes on your hip, not on your stomach: the hip bone is the fulcrum.
  • Turn their thumb to the ceiling before you lift the hips.
  • Pivot your hips to face the trapped arm before you lift.
  • If it does not bite with the triangle locked, unlock and swing the choking leg over the face.

Common mistakes

  • Opening the legs to armbar. — They pull the head and the arm out together. — Finish from inside the locked triangle.
  • Pulling the arm straight up. — There is no fulcrum under the elbow, so nothing locks. — Pull the arm across your body to your hip.
  • Finishing with the thumb sideways. — The elbow bends sideways instead of locking. — Rotate the thumb up first, then lift.

How to drill it

Triangle, the partner postures, you finish the armbar, 8 reps.

Safety

The lock comes on fast: lift the hips slowly.
