Opposite-Shoulder Omoplata Roll

Escape · Closed Guard

Gets you out of an omoplata and keeps you on top in his guard instead of giving side control. When he drives the trapped shoulder toward the mat and you cannot hold your posture, turn your head toward him, not away. Dive the trapped arm and your head under toward his hip and roll over your other shoulder. As you roll, hug both his legs with your free arm so he cannot follow you on top; the trapped arm shrinks free as you come around, and you land in his guard holding his legs. Practise the roll slowly; if the shoulder is already turned, tap.

How to do it

  1. When their legs drive your trapped shoulder toward the mat and you can no longer hold posture, turn your head toward them, not away.
  2. Dive the trapped arm and your head under, toward their hip, and roll over your other shoulder.
  3. As you roll, hug both their legs with your free arm so they cannot follow you on top.
  4. Let the trapped arm shrink free toward the mat as your body comes around.
  5. Land back in their guard still holding the legs, and start passing.

Key details

  • Head toward them: you go under and roll over the free shoulder, not the trapped one.
  • Hugging the legs is what keeps them from coming on top.
  • Do not pull the arm: the turn of your body frees it.

Common mistakes

  • Rolling over the trapped shoulder by habit. — They follow you over and come up in side control or into an armlock. — Turn the head toward them and go under the other way.
  • Letting go of their legs during the roll. — Nothing stops them coming on top. — Hug both legs through the whole roll.

How to drill it

Partner sets the omoplata slowly and drives the shoulder down; roll under to the other shoulder holding the legs, 6 reps each side on soft mats.

Safety

Tap if the shoulder is already turned. Learn the shoulder roll first so the neck stays safe.
