Caught in an omoplata

Position · Closed Guard

His legs trap your shoulder from the side, his leg over your back and your arm bent along his hip, and he sits up to finish by pushing your arm forward. Act before you are flat on your belly: keep your head up and posture, grab your own belt or thigh with the trapped hand, and step your legs around toward his head to take the angle away. If you are not flat yet, roll forward over the shoulder or stand and step around for the Omoplata Defense. His goals are to flatten you, control your waist and turn the shoulder. The detail beginners miss is that he must hold your hips: once your hips are flat on the mat, the roll is gone.

How to do it

  1. Keep your chest off the mat, on your knees, as soon as their legs trap your shoulder. Once your chest is down they sit up and finish, and there is no roll left.
  2. Turn your head to the far side, away from the trapped arm, and tuck your chin. The head leaves the path of the roll so you go over the shoulder.
  3. Walk your legs towards their head in short steps, so your body follows the direction the arm is being turned.
  4. Roll forward over the trapped shoulder, pushing off your feet; the bent arm unwinds as your body turns around it.
  5. Come up in their guard with the arm free, elbow back at your ribs, and build posture.

Key details

  • Roll early, while on your knees: the legs under you drive the roll.
  • Chin tucked in the roll: the weight goes over the back of the shoulder, not the neck.
  • Tap if the shoulder is already turned: rolling then only adds force to the lock.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling the arm out of their legs. — It turns the shoulder further into the lock. — Roll so the arm unwinds.
  • Lying flat on the belly. — No roll is left and they sit up to finish. — Roll before the chest drops.
  • Rolling over the head. — The neck takes the load. — Roll over the shoulder, chin tucked.

If they defend

  • They hold your belt. → Walk around to their head first.
  • They follow into a triangle. → Posture and stack.

How to drill it

Partner sets the omoplata slowly, you roll out, 6 each side on soft mats.

Safety

Learn the forward roll first; tap if the shoulder is turned.
