Twister

Submission · Turtle

A spine lock from the truck: the head is pulled one way while his laced leg is stretched the other, twisting the spine and neck. It starts from behind the turtle when you lace one of his legs with your leg from the inside and sit to the side so he falls onto his side. Keep that leg stretched away the whole time, pass his near arm over your own head so it is trapped behind your neck, wrap his head with your far arm and clasp your hands. The two opposite pulls are the whole finish, not the arm wrap by itself. The truck is the valuable part: he cannot turn to face you, and it leads to the back. If he frees the leg, take the back; if he turns into you, go to side control. Banned under IBJJF at all belts: drill the position, never the finish.

How to do it

  1. From behind the turtle, lace one of their legs with your leg, wrapping it from the inside: the truck.
  2. Sit to the side so they fall onto their side, keeping the laced leg stretched away from you.
  3. Isolate their near arm and pass it over your own head so it is trapped behind your neck.
  4. Wrap the head with your far arm and clasp your hands, keeping the laced leg stretched the whole time.
  5. The finish pulls the head and upper body toward you while the leg is stretched the other way, twisting the spine. In training turn them only for position, never to the tap.

Key details

  • The truck is the valuable part: with one leg laced they cannot turn to face you, and it is a path to the back.
  • The twister is a spine lock: two opposite pulls, head one way and leg the other, twist the spine and neck.
  • Banned in IBJJF: learn the position, not the finish.
  • Control his near wrist before anything else: with the leg laced he cannot turn toward you, with the wrist held he cannot turn away. Your arm goes behind the head, not the neck.

Common mistakes

  • Twisting to finish. — The finish injures the neck and the spine. — Use the truck for the back take instead.
  • Losing the laced leg. — With the leg free they turn to face you. — Keep the lace tight and the leg stretched.
  • Using it where it is banned. — In IBJJF it is an instant disqualification. — Check the rules first.

How to drill it

Truck entries only, 6 each side; go from the truck to the back.

Safety

A spine lock: banned in IBJJF competition at all belts. Do not apply the finish in training; drill the truck position only.
