Rolling Collar Choke

Submission · Turtle

A gi collar choke with a roll: a deep grip on his far collar under the neck tightens across his throat once you roll him onto his back. It starts at the side of the turtle when he hides the neck but the collar is open. Pull the collar away from his neck with one hand and feed the other under the neck to a deep far-collar grip, fingers inside. Put your head on the mat on the far side and roll over his back, over your shoulder, not your head, hooking a leg so he rolls with you. Then pull the collar and bring your elbow down. The grip must be deep before the roll: afterwards you cannot improve it. If he posts to block the roll, take the back; if he grabs the choking hand, switch to the clock choke. Choke slowly and release at the tap.

How to do it

  1. From the side of the turtle, open their collar with one hand, pulling it away from the neck.
  2. Feed your other hand under the neck to a deep grip of the far collar, fingers inside the collar.
  3. Put your head on the mat on the far side and roll over their back, over your shoulder and not over your head.
  4. Keep the grip, and hook a leg, so they roll with you onto their back.
  5. Pull the collar and bring your elbow down to finish, slowly: the collar tightens across the neck.

Key details

  • A deep grip before the roll: after the roll you cannot improve it.
  • Roll over the shoulder, not the head: it protects your neck and keeps the grip tight.
  • They must roll with you: the choke only tightens once they are on their back.
  • Slide the hand until your wrist touches the side of the neck, then close the grip; finish by drawing the elbow down toward you, never by pushing.

Common mistakes

  • A shallow grip. — After the roll there is no choke. — Feed the grip deep, the fingers inside the collar.
  • Rolling alone. — You end on your back and they stand. — Hook a leg so they come with you.
  • Letting go after the roll. — They turn out and escape. — Keep pulling until the tap.

How to drill it

Partner in turtle, 6 slow rolls each side; stop before pressure.

Safety

Roll over the shoulder and choke slowly; release at the tap.
