Reverse Omoplata

Submission · Turtle

A shoulder lock from the side of the turtle: his near arm is trapped behind your bent leg, and a roll turns the shoulder past its range. You set it up by driving your knee under his near armpit, stepping over the arm and passing it behind your other leg, whose heel blocks the arm from sliding back. The moment is when he hugs that leg: his arm is committed and his weight is on you. Dive your arm under his near shoulder and roll over your own shoulder, grabbing his knee, then triangle your legs on the arm with knees pinched and hips tight to his shoulder, and walk your shoulders toward his knee. Holding the knee stops him rolling out of the pressure. If he pulls the arm back, return to the crucifix. It comes on mid-roll: go slowly.

How to do it

  1. From side ride on the turtle, drive your knee under his near armpit to lift the arm away from his body and expose it.
  2. Step over the arm with your outside leg and drag it back between your knees.
  3. Cross your knee over and pass the arm behind your other leg; bend that leg so the heel blocks the arm and it cannot slide back.
  4. When he hugs that leg, dive your arm under his near shoulder and roll over your own shoulder, grabbing his knee.
  5. Triangle your legs on the arm, keep your knees pinched and hips close to his shoulder, walk your shoulders toward his knee and let the roll turn the shoulder slowly.

Key details

  • The bent leg is the lock: he cannot straighten the arm further than your heel allows.
  • His hug on your leg is the trigger for the roll: his arm is committed and his weight is on you.
  • Hold his knee through the roll so he cannot roll out of the pressure.
  • Knees pinched and hips close to his shoulder so the arm cannot slide out.
  • After the roll, put your chest on his shoulder and your elbow across his face so he cannot move, grab his leg, then drive your hips in to finish.

Common mistakes

  • Straightening the blocking leg. — The heel no longer blocks, and the arm slides back to the other side. — Keep the leg bent, heel against the arm.
  • Rolling without the knee. — He rolls with you and escapes the pressure. — Grab and hug his knee as you roll.
  • Finishing with a fast roll. — The shoulder tears before he can tap. — Roll slowly and stop at the tap.

If they defend

  • He rolls to escape the pressure. → Follow the roll and keep the arm: finish on top.

How to drill it

From side ride: crucifix entry, pass the arm to the other leg, roll to the reverse omoplata, 5 each side, slowly.

Safety

A shoulder lock that comes on during a roll: go slowly, the partner taps early.
