Pena Choke

Submission · Turtle

A gi choke with your own lapel, from Felipe "Preguiça" Pena: the underhook traps his arm high, your lapel wraps his neck, and your leg over him adds the pressure, much like a bow and arrow. The moment is when you have the seatbelt but he blocks the hooks. Fall to your underhook side, pulling him onto his side with you. Shoot the underhook deep and grab his shoulder so his arm stays trapped up. With the other hand pull out your own opposite lapel and feed it around his neck to the underhook hand. Sit to the side, throw your leg over his head and shoulder, push his head away with the leg and pull the lapel. The lapel must reach the underhook hand before the leg goes over, or there is nothing to pull. If he pushes the leg off, switch to the bow and arrow; if he turns to face you, take side control.

How to do it

  1. From the seatbelt on his turtle, when he blocks the hooks, fall to your underhook side, pulling him onto his side.
  2. Shoot the underhook deep and grab his shoulder so his arm stays trapped up.
  3. With the other hand pull out your own opposite lapel and feed it around his neck to the underhook hand.
  4. Sit to the side and throw your leg over his head and shoulder.
  5. Push his head away with the leg and pull the lapel slowly to finish.

Key details

  • The underhook traps his arm high, so he cannot bring that hand to the lapel.
  • The lapel reaches the underhook hand before the leg goes over.
  • The leg pushes the head away while the lapel pulls: the finish is like a bow and arrow.

Common mistakes

  • Staying square behind him. — There is no angle for the leg. — Fall to the underhook side first.
  • A shallow underhook. — His arm comes down and strips the lapel. — Grab his shoulder with the underhook hand.
  • Throwing the leg before the lapel is passed. — There is nothing to pull. — Pass the lapel, then the leg.

How to drill it

Partner in turtle, seatbelt on: 6 slow entries each side; stop before pressure.

Safety

Pull the lapel slowly and release at the tap; the leg on the head also loads the neck.
