Hammerlock

Submission · Turtle

A shoulder lock on an arm bent behind his back: lifting the wrist away from the back rotates the shoulder inward past its range. The moment is at the side of the turtle when his arm ends up behind his back, the back of the hand on his lower back. Pin the wrist there with your hand, keep his elbow bent at a right angle, and put your weight on that shoulder with your chest or knee so he cannot roll forward and free it. Slide the wrist up his back toward the head, then lift it slowly away from the back. The bent elbow is the lever; if the arm straightens, there is no lock. If he rolls forward, go to the kimura; if he straightens the arm, take the back. The shoulder gives little warning: lift slowly and release at the tap.

How to do it

  1. Their arm ends up bent behind their back, the back of the hand on their lower back.
  2. Pin the wrist to their lower back with your hand, keeping their elbow bent at a right angle.
  3. Keep your weight on the shoulder of that arm, with your chest or knee, so they cannot roll forward and free it.
  4. Slide the wrist up their back towards the head, keeping the elbow bent.
  5. Lift the wrist slowly away from the back until the tap: the bent arm levers the shoulder in rotation.

Key details

  • Weight on the shoulder: no roll, so the shoulder cannot follow the arm and escape the pressure.
  • The elbow stays bent: the bent forearm is the lever on the shoulder.
  • Slow: the shoulder has little warning before it is injured.
  • A stronger finish: wedge your forearm over his wrist to keep the hand high on his back, lock your hands over his shoulder and pull the shoulder toward you.

Common mistakes

  • No weight on the shoulder. — They roll forward and the arm is free. — Chest or knee on the shoulder.
  • Straightening their arm. — With a straight arm the lever disappears. — Keep the elbow bent at a right angle.
  • Jerking the wrist up. — The shoulder is injured before the tap. — Lift slowly and wait for the tap.

How to drill it

Partner in turtle gives the arm, 6 slow reps each side, stop before pressure.

Safety
