Whizzer Throw

Takedown · Standing

A counter throw from the clinch: from standing against a deep underhook to side control. The moment is when he digs the underhook and drives his weight forward into you. Clamp your arm over his as a whizzer, tight at his armpit, and hang your weight on it to stop the drive. Step your whizzer-side leg across in front of him and pivot in one motion so your hip lands in front of his and lower; then turn hips and head away and pull the trapped arm across your hip, so he goes over it toward the whizzer side. A loose whizzer or turning in before his weight comes forward lets him pull the arm out and take your back. If he senses it and drops to a single leg, go back to the whizzer.

How to do it

  1. They take a deep underhook; clamp your arm over theirs as a whizzer, tight at the armpit.
  2. Put your weight on the whizzer to stop their drive, and wait until their weight comes forward onto you.
  3. Step the whizzer-side leg across in front of them, hips lower than theirs, stepping and pivoting in one motion so your hip ends up in front of theirs.
  4. Turn your hips and head away, pulling the whizzer down and pulling the overhooked arm across your hip.
  5. They go over your hip: keep your weight over them as they fall and land on top in side control.

Key details

  • The whizzer is tight at the armpit: a loose whizzer lets them pull the arm out and take the back.
  • Hip in front, then turn: without your hip in front of theirs there is nothing for them to go over.
  • Use their forward drive, and do not turn in before their weight comes onto you.
  • Pull the overhooked arm across your hip as you turn.
  • Step and pivot in one motion: crossed feet leave you out of position.
  • The same entry works as uchi mata: load them onto your hip with the whizzer, then lift the inside of their thigh with your leg while your head goes down, like a seesaw.

Common mistakes

  • A loose whizzer. — Space at the armpit lets them pull the arm out and take the back. — Clamp tight at the armpit.
  • Throwing without stepping across. — Your hip is not in front of them, so they simply walk around you. — Put your hip in front first.
  • Falling with them onto your back. — Your weight goes with theirs: they land on top of you. — Keep your weight over them as they fall.
  • Letting go of the whizzer to post a hand as they fall. — With the arm free the throw ends in a scramble instead of on top. — Keep the whizzer clamped on the triceps through the landing.

If they defend

  • They step behind you. → Turn into them and square up.

How to drill it

Partner takes an underhook, 8 slow throws each side on mats.

Safety

Keep hold of the arm so the partner can breakfall; do not land on their head or neck.
