Slide-By
Transition · Standing
Go with their pull: release the wrist, step past their hip on the trapped side and slide behind them to a waist lock.
How to do it
- From the Russian tie, one hand on their wrist and the other on their upper arm, feel them pull the trapped arm back toward themselves. Do not resist: their pull is your signal.
- Let go of the wrist and keep the grip on the upper arm. Their pull now draws you in toward their side instead of taking the arm away.
- Step your inside foot past their hip on the trapped-arm side, close to them, your chest sliding along their side. Turn the hips explosively as you pass: the change of direction carries you behind them.
- Reach around the far side of their waist and lock your hands low on their belly, wrists tight. Keep your chest glued to their side so there is no gap for them to turn back in.
- Settle behind with the waist lock, chest on their back, and take them down or climb to the back.
Key details
- Every reaction to the Russian tie is an opening: when they pull the arm back, their pull is the engine that brings you past them and behind.
- Move the feet first, the hands follow: the step past the hip makes the angle, the waist lock only holds what the feet won.
- Stay chest to their side: a gap lets them turn back in and face you.
- Turn the hips explosively as you pass: the change of direction does the work while they are still pulling the other way.
- The same slide-by works from the collar tie: as they push into you, bump their tying elbow across from underneath with the back of your wrist, dip your ear to your shoulder so the arm slides over your head, pivot behind and get chest to chest at once, before they pull the arm back.
Common mistakes
- Pulling the arm to go behind. — You fight their pull instead of using it: both of you pull and nobody moves. — Release the wrist and step on their pull, so their own force carries you past the hip.
- Stepping too wide. — The long way round takes time: they turn to face you before you arrive. — Step close past the hip, your chest brushing along their side.
- A loose waist lock. — With space between your arms and their body they peel the hands and turn in. — Lock low on their belly, wrists tight, chest pressed to their back.
- A slow pivot with a gap after clearing the arm. — They square up again, pull the arm back through, or drop to your legs. — Pivot hard and get torso-to-torso contact the moment the arm is past.
How to drill it
Partner pulls the arm back on a signal; you slide-by and lock the waist, 10 each side. Then free Russian tie rounds.
