Shuck

Transition · Standing

Grab their elbow, shuck it past your head and step to the side to their back.

How to do it

  1. In the clinch they lean heavily on your neck with one arm. Wait for that weight: it is what makes them fall past you.
  2. Grab their elbow on the neck side, cupping it from underneath, so you can steer the arm off your neck.
  3. Throw the elbow down and across your body as your head slips out from under the arm; turn your head away so the arm slides off the neck. Across and down, not up.
  4. Step to the side and behind them in the same motion, while their weight carries them past you.
  5. Keep going to the back: take a body lock or the back before they turn to face you.

Key details

  • Use their weight: once the arm comes off your neck, the weight they put on it makes them fall past you.
  • Head moves, feet move: the shuck and the step are one movement.
  • Go behind at once, before they recover.
  • Across and down, not up: pushing the elbow up is a duck-under.
  • Turn your head away as you shuck so the arm slides off the neck.
  • If they do not lean, make them: give a small push to the throat or chest, and as they push back, hook the triceps and throw the arm between your arms and past you.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing the arm without moving. — You stay in front of them: they recover and grab the neck again. — Step to the side as you shuck.
  • Shucking a light arm. — There is no weight to make them fall, so they just pull the arm back. — Wait until they lean on you.
  • Stopping beside them. — Beside them you have no control: they turn and face you again. — Keep going to the back and lock your hands around the body.

How to drill it

Partner leans on your neck, 10 shucks each side to the back.
