Leg Hook Takedown

Takedown · Standing

Ouchi gake takes you from a close underhook clinch to a top position by hooking the leg they stand on from the inside. The moment is when they are tight to you with the weight on one leg. Pull them in to load that leg, step your foot deep between their legs with your hips close, and hook the standing leg from the inside, calf behind their knee, the back of your knee against the back of theirs. Drive your chest into theirs as you lift the hook: the hook takes the leg, the chest pushes their weight back over it. Fall forward on top into side control or half guard. An unloaded leg simply lifts out of the hook. If they step the leg back, go to the body lock.

How to do it

  1. In the clinch, pull them close so their weight comes onto one leg and they stand on it.
  2. Step your foot deep between their legs, your hips close to theirs.
  3. Hook the standing leg from the inside with your leg, calf behind their knee, the back of your knee against the back of theirs. Hook as the weight comes onto that leg.
  4. Drive your chest into theirs and lift the hook at the same moment: the hook takes the leg, the chest pushes their weight back over it.
  5. Fall forward on top, keeping your weight over them, and settle in side control or half guard top.

Key details

  • The hook takes the leg, the chest takes the balance: one without the other lets them hop and stay up.
  • Hook the leg that carries the weight: a loaded leg cannot lift off the hook.
  • Land on top, chest to chest, with your weight forward over them.
  • Hook with the back of your knee against the back of theirs, from the inside: the knee bends and cannot hold their weight.
  • Drop the knee of your hooking leg to the mat: the drop locks their leg, and then a simple push with the chest takes them down. Hooking with the knee up and pulling with the leg lets them escape or counter.

Common mistakes

  • Hooking a leg that is already stepping away. — There is no weight on it: they lift it off the hook and keep their balance. — Hook as the weight comes onto that leg and drive with the chest at once.
  • No chest pressure. — Their weight stays over the other leg: they hop and stay up. — Drive forward as you hook.
  • Falling on your back with them. — Your weight goes back with theirs: you fall together and they land on top. — Keep your weight forward over them.

If they defend

  • They hop on the free leg. → Keep driving and follow him.

How to drill it

Clinch entries 10 each side, then 5 finishes each side on mats.

Safety

Do not land with full weight on the partner's knee or chest. Hook deep and drop your knee, then let them fall: do not crank the hooked leg.
