Blast Double

Takedown · Standing

A double leg with a run-up: from standing at open distance straight to side control. The moment is when he walks straight at you, tall and square, with no grips: his own step adds to your impact. Change levels as his foot lands, less deep than a normal double, back straight, head up and eyes forward, then push off the back leg and blast your shoulder through his hips, head on his midsection or forehead in the middle of his chest. Wrap both legs behind the knees and pull them in while the shoulder drives forward, feet churning, straight back until he lands. What decides it is to keep driving after contact: stop and he sprawls, and then you switch to a single leg.

How to do it

  1. They walk straight at you, tall and square. Wait until their step brings them into range.
  2. Change levels as they step, not as low as for a normal double: back straight, head up, eyes forward.
  3. Push off the back leg and blast your shoulder through their hips, head on their midsection or forehead in the middle of the chest.
  4. Wrap both legs behind the knees, pulling them in as your shoulder drives forward.
  5. Keep the feet churning and drive them straight back until they land; land on top.

Key details

  • Use their step towards you: their own forward motion meets your blast.
  • Head up, back straight, head on their midsection or forehead in the middle of the chest.
  • Not as low as a normal double: you blast through them, not across.
  • Keep driving after the contact: push off the back leg and keep the feet churning until they land.
  • Head in the middle of the chest or stomach keeps you safe: even if the blast stalls, a centred head is hard to guillotine. Shrug the shoulders and keep the neck strong, then pull the legs to your chest while the head pushes.
  • Get their feet square first: against a staggered stance a double is hard, so circle until their feet are level, then change levels as they come up.

Common mistakes

  • Shooting from too far. — You land short of their legs and they sprawl. — Shoot as they step into range.
  • Head down. — Your head is under their chest: they catch a guillotine or snap you down. — Eyes forward, head up.
  • Stopping at the contact. — Without drive their legs are free to go back: they sprawl out of the double. — Keep the legs driving forward.

If they defend

  • They whizzer one side. → Turn the corner to the other side.

How to drill it

Partner walks forward, 8 blast doubles on crash mats.

Safety

Do not spike the partner onto the head: as they go down, drive your head across their body and bring them down to the side, landing on top.
