Arm Drag

Transition · Standing

Trap the wrist and pull the arm across their body while you step to the outside and spin behind them.

How to do it

  1. Grab their wrist with your same-side hand, just above the wrist bone.
  2. With the other hand, grab high behind their triceps, near the armpit: lower down, the arm slips out as soon as they straighten it.
  3. Drop a little and pull the arm across their centerline in an arc toward your hip, not your chest. The triceps grip pulls; the wrist grip only steers.
  4. At the same moment step your outside foot past their shoulder line: you go around them while their arm goes across. Keep your head level with or below their shoulder.
  5. Come behind them and lock your hands around the waist, chest to back.

Key details

  • Pull and step together: you go around them, they do not move. A drag without the step only turns them back to you.
  • The triceps grip pulls; the wrist grip only steers.
  • Pull the arm across their centerline in an arc, not straight back: the arc closes their far side and opens the back.
  • Your outside foot steps past their shoulder line at the same moment as the pull, with your head level with or below their shoulder so the guillotine is not there.
  • Finish chest to back with the hands locked around the waist.
  • Drag only when his hands are below your armpits. Against high, busy hands the drag is hard to land; and once he knows it is coming he pulls the wrist away, so have the next attack ready (pull the head down into a snap down, or shoot).

Common mistakes

  • Pulling without stepping. — They turn and face you again. — Step to their back as you drag.
  • Grabbing the hand instead of the wrist. — The hand slips out and the drag is gone. — Grip just above the wrist bone.
  • Pulling while standing tall. — They see it coming and pull the arm back. — Drop a little and pull the arm to your hip, not your chest.

If they defend

  • They turn with you. → Drag the other arm the other way.

How to drill it

Arm drag to back and waist lock, 10 each side while the partner moves; then with the partner trying to turn.
