Von Flue Choke

Submission · Side Control

A counter-choke: your shoulder drives into the side of his neck and his own choking arm closes the other side. It works when he holds a guillotine from the bottom and you have passed his legs to side control, so he can no longer pull you into the choke with his legs. First make your neck safe: pull down on his choking wrist and turn your head so your throat is not on his forearm. Then settle chest to chest perpendicular to him, sprawl your hips low and drop your shoulder into his neck, keeping his arm wrapped around your head. The pressure comes from your weight through the shoulder, not from pushing with the arms. If his legs are still around you, the guillotine wins: pass first. If he lets go, you keep side control; if he turns in to recover guard with the arm still on, defend the guillotine. Drop the weight gradually: he may not feel it until it closes.

How to do it

  1. He holds a guillotine and you pass his legs to side control. Do not stop to fight the grip while his legs are still around you.
  2. Make your neck safe: pull his choking wrist down and turn your head so your throat is off his forearm.
  3. Settle chest to chest, perpendicular to him, his arm still wrapped around your head.
  4. Sprawl your hips low and drop your shoulder into the side of his neck, slowly, until the tap.

Key details

  • Pass first: with his legs around you the guillotine is stronger than your counter.
  • His own arm closes one side of his neck; your shoulder closes the other.
  • Weight, not arms: sprawl and let the chest and shoulder sink.

Common mistakes

  • Trying it from inside his guard. — His legs pull you into the guillotine. — Clear the legs to side control first.
  • Throat left on his forearm. — You get choked while setting the counter. — Pull the wrist down and turn the head before driving the shoulder.

How to drill it

Partner holds a loose guillotine from guard; you pass to side control and set the shoulder without pressure, 8 reps each side.

Safety

He may not feel the choke until it closes: add weight gradually and release at the tap. If his guillotine is already deep, tap first.
