Under north-south

Position · Side Control

He lies chest to chest on you, head toward your legs, his arms around your shoulders or under your arms, and his chest on your face. Keep your elbows tight and frame with your forearms on his hips or under his armpits to keep his chest off your face and make room to breathe. If he drops his chest on your face, bridge and turn to one side, slide your arm in and use the space for the North-South Escape, coming back to guard or your knees. His goals are the north-south choke, a kimura on your arm and moving to side control. The detail beginners miss is turning onto your side: lying flat lets his chest settle on your face.

How to do it

  1. Turn your face to one side to breathe; their chest lies on your face.
  2. Keep your elbows tight, with no arms under their chest or around their back, so they have no arm to catch for a kimura.
  3. Frame on their hips with your forearms, elbows bent, holding their weight on bone.
  4. Push on the frames, turn to your side and shrimp your hips away to make space.
  5. Bring your knee in between you, then square up and recover guard.

Key details

  • Frames on the hips: the hips carry their weight.
  • On your side, not flat: only on your side can you shrimp.
  • Protect the near arm from the kimura: north-south is a classic kimura position.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing on their head. — The head is light, the weight stays. — Frame on the hips.
  • Hugging their back. — They catch the arm for a kimura. — Keep the elbows in.
  • Lying flat. — There is no room to shrimp. — Turn to the side first.

If they defend

  • They go for the north-south choke. → Near arm tight to the neck.
  • They go back to side control. → Frame and shrimp.

How to drill it

Partner holds north-south, 3 × 1 minute: turn, frame, knee in.
