Tricep Slicer

Submission · Side Control

A compression lock on the back of the upper arm: his bent arm is held by your kimura grip and your leg or forearm is a wedge across his triceps, and the grip pulls the arm against the wedge, crushing the triceps and straining the elbow. It comes from side control top when he braces against the kimura and you cannot rotate the arm. Keep the figure-four, step your leg over his head as in the tripod so your shin or calf lies across the back of his upper arm above the elbow, then pull his bent arm toward you over that leg slowly. The wedge must sit on the triceps; on the elbow joint it becomes a twist, not a slicer. A version also exists from bottom side control, against an arm the top player leaves around your head. If he straightens the arm, take the armbar; if he turns away from the pressure, take the back. Many rule sets keep slicers for advanced belts: check the rules and squeeze very slowly.

How to do it

  1. Hold the kimura grip from side control; he braces the arm and you cannot rotate it.
  2. Keep the figure-four and step your leg over his head as for the tripod.
  3. Set your shin or calf across the back of his upper arm, above the elbow.
  4. Pull the bent arm toward you over that leg slowly until the tap. The leg is the wedge, the grip is the lever.

Key details

  • The wedge sits on the triceps above the elbow. On the joint it becomes a twist, not a slicer.
  • Do not let go of the figure-four: it is both the control and the lever.
  • It also exists from bottom side control, against an arm the top player leaves around your head.

Common mistakes

  • Wedge on the elbow joint. — No compression, and the elbow is loaded at an unsafe angle. — Move the leg higher onto the triceps.
  • Cranking fast. — Muscle and elbow are injured before the tap. — Pull slowly and wait for the tap.

How to drill it

From the kimura grip, partner braces; you step over and set the wedge without pulling, 8 reps each side.

Safety

A compression lock on the upper arm and elbow: many rule sets allow slicers only for advanced belts. Check the rules and apply very slowly.
