Shotgun Armbar

Submission · Side Control

An armbar on the arm he digs under you. As soon as his near arm slides under your belly, your hip-side arm goes under it and clamps it to your side, a reverse overhook, his elbow at your ribs. Your head-side arm takes his far shoulder with the forearm across his chin, a reverse crossface, so he cannot turn in and the ghost escape stops. Bring your near knee from his hip up to his armpit and pin the shoulder. Let him spend energy trying to pull out, then squeeze the overhook and lift your chest slowly: the straight arm bends the wrong way against your ribs. The elbow goes early in this position, so finish slowly.

How to do it

  1. As soon as his arm slides under your belly, your hip-side arm goes under his arm and clamps it to your side: a reverse overhook. His elbow is at your ribs.
  2. Your other hand takes his far shoulder and your forearm goes across his chin. This reverse crossface stops him turning in to you: the escape is over.
  3. Bring your near knee from his hip up to his armpit and pin the shoulder to the mat.
  4. Let him spend energy trying to pull free. The arm stays straight across your body.
  5. Squeeze the overhook slowly and lift your chest: the elbow straightens against your ribs. Until the tap.

Key details

  • Catch the arm at once, while it is flat under you. Once his knees come under you, the moment is gone.
  • The chin decides it: without the reverse crossface he turns in to you and comes out.
  • Stop the escape first, attack second. Rushing the lever lets his shoulder go.

Common mistakes

  • Pressing your weight onto his arm. — He rocks under you and sweeps you or stands up. — Do not press it; clamp the arm to your side with the overhook.
  • Leaving his head free. — He turns in to you and dives into the ghost escape. — Forearm across the chin, shoulder pinned.
  • Attacking the elbow straight away. — The control is not ready yet and the arm slips out. — Knee to the armpit first, then the lever.

If they defend

  • He bends the trapped arm. → Keep the reverse crossface and walk to north-south: the arm straightens again as you turn.
  • He turns to his knees. → Keep the overhook and take the front headlock.

How to drill it

Partner digs the arm under you at half speed; you catch it with the overhook and set the reverse crossface, 8 each side, no finish.

Safety

The elbow goes very early in this position. Straighten slowly and let go at the first tap.
