Reverse Crucifix Choke

Submission · Side Control

A forearm choke across the throat from the reverse crucifix: his near arm is trapped in your legs and his free arm is wrapped behind you, so nothing defends the neck. Slide your arm under his head, put your other hand flat on his chest and slide it up under his chin, then lock your hands in a gable grip. Squeeze your elbows together while your knees stay pinched on the trapped arm; or slide the arm through and switch to an Ezekiel grip, the hand on your own forearm. A fist pushed at the neck stops on a tucked chin; the flat hand slides under it. If he brings the free hand to your face, take the americana; if he pulls the arm free, settle into kesa gatame. Squeeze gradually and release at the tap.

How to do it

  1. In the reverse crucifix keep his near arm trapped in your legs, knees squeezed, your arm under his head.
  2. When he keeps his free arm wrapped around you, put your other hand flat on his chest.
  3. Slide that flat hand up under his chin and lock your hands in a gable grip.
  4. Squeeze your elbows together and your knees together, slowly, until the tap.
  5. If the angle is wrong, slide the arm through and finish with an Ezekiel grip, the hand on your own forearm.

Key details

  • The legs make the choke: with one arm trapped and the other behind you, the neck has no defender.
  • Flat hand on the chest, then under the chin: it slides past a tucked chin where a fist stops.
  • Keep squeezing the knees while you choke: if the arm comes out, you are back in kesa gatame.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing a fist at the neck. — He tucks the chin and the choke does not go in. — Hand flat on his chest, slide it under the chin.
  • Loosening the legs to work the choke. — He pulls the arm out and the position is gone. — Knees squeezed on his elbow the whole time.
  • Leaning back with his free hand in your face. — He rolls you backward over him. — Crossface him and bend his neck, then go for the arm.

How to drill it

From side control, take the reverse crucifix, partner hugs you with the free arm; set the gable grip without squeezing, 8 reps each side.

Safety

The forearm presses the windpipe: squeeze gradually and release at the tap; his arm is trapped, so he may tap with a foot or by voice.
