Elbow Lever from Tripod

Submission · Side Control

A straight armlock: the elbow is bent backward over your shin. It comes from the tripod after the kimura from side control, when he stays flat on his back and keeps the trapped arm straight and stiff so the figure-four cannot bend it. Turn his palm up so the back of his elbow faces the mat, slide your shin under the arm just above the elbow as the fulcrum and keep his wrist in your hand. Lean your weight down onto the wrist, toward the mat: the shin holds the elbow up and the joint bends the wrong way. The shin must sit at the elbow, not under the forearm. If he bends the arm, the kimura is back on. The straight elbow gives quickly: lean slowly.

How to do it

  1. In the tripod, keep the figure-four on his trapped arm and your knee posted. When he lies flat and locks the arm straight against the bend, stop forcing the kimura: the straight arm is the opening.
  2. Keep your hand on his wrist and turn his palm up, so the back of his elbow faces the mat. Take your other arm out from under his arm and use it to hold his upper arm in place.
  3. Slide your shin under his arm just above the elbow, on the back of the upper arm, so the elbow rests on the shin. Your posted knee and the other foot keep your base wide.
  4. Keep his shoulder pinned with your weight close to his armpit, so he cannot turn toward you and roll the elbow off the shin.
  5. Lean your weight down onto the wrist, toward the mat, slowly. The shin holds the elbow up, the wrist goes down and the joint bends the wrong way.

Key details

  • Palm up before you lean. Only then does the back of the elbow sit on your shin.
  • The fulcrum sits at the elbow. Under the forearm the shin only lifts the arm.
  • Lean with body weight through the wrist, not arm strength. The distance is short and weight is easy to control.
  • Keep his shoulder pinned. If he turns in, the elbow rolls sideways and the lever is gone.

Common mistakes

  • The shin under the forearm. — There is no fulcrum at the joint, so the arm just pivots. — Slide the shin up until you feel the elbow on it.
  • The thumb pointing down. — The elbow faces sideways and simply bends, or the pressure goes into the shoulder. — Turn the palm up before you lean.
  • Dropping the weight fast. — The straight elbow has no slack and gets injured before he can tap. — Lean slowly and stop at the first pressure.

How to drill it

Your partner lies flat in your tripod with the arm straight. Place the shin, turn the palm and lean lightly until he feels pressure, five times on each side; then he alternates bending the arm, when you return to the kimura, and keeping it straight.

Safety

A straight elbow lock breaks quickly: lean slowly and release at the tap.
