Kipping Escape

Escape · Mount

Takes you from under mount to butterfly guard when his feet are locked under you and the elbow-knee escape has no gap. Keep your elbows tight, armpits closed, and put both hands on his hips as frames. Press your legs together and lift them so your thighs come up behind his buttocks, then hop your hips off the mat, once or twice, so his hips slide lower down your legs. Pull your knees inside his legs and set butterfly hooks; he often drops to one knee, which gives you half guard or butterfly. It is not a bench press: the frames only hold him while the hips do the work. Open armpits let him isolate an arm or set an arm triangle.

How to do it

  1. Keep your elbows tight to your ribs and put both hands on their hips as frames, armpits closed.
  2. Press your legs together and lift them so your thighs come up behind their buttocks.
  3. Hop your hips up off the mat, once or twice, so their hips slide lower down your legs.
  4. Pull your knees inside their legs as soon as there is room.
  5. Set butterfly hooks; if they drop to one knee, work half guard or butterfly from there.

Key details

  • The frames only hold; the hips do the work: it is a hop, not a bench press.
  • Armpits closed the whole time, so no arm is left to isolate or trap in an arm triangle.
  • Each hop slides their hips lower on your legs; it may take a few.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing them off with straight arms. — They are heavier than your arms and the straight arm is open to an armbar. — Frame with elbows in and lift with the hips.
  • Opening the armpits. — They isolate an arm or set an arm triangle. — Keep the triceps against your sides.

How to drill it

Partner mounts with feet hooked under you; kip to butterfly guard, 8 reps, then 1-minute rounds.
