Leg caught

Position · Leg Locks

He has entangled one of your legs, his legs around your thigh and your foot near his armpit, and he reaches for the heel. The first priority is the heel and the knee line: point your toes, keep the heel turned in and hidden from his armpit, and stop his knees from pinching your thigh. Do not spin blindly: a heel hook can tear the knee before it hurts, so tap early if it is locked. If he holds the leg with the heel still hidden, go for Leg Lock Defense; if his knees are squeezed but the heel hidden, the Saddle Escape; if he is in 50-50 reaching for the heel, the 50-50 Escape. Clear his outside leg off your hip and pull your knee out past his hips.

How to do it

  1. Point your toes and hide your heel, turned away from their hands. Their heel hook needs your heel in their grip.
  2. Sit up and grip their pants or collar. Sitting up brings your hands to their legs and stops them stretching you out flat.
  3. Clear the leg that pins your hip: push it down and off with your hands. While it is on your hip, your knee cannot turn or move out.
  4. Turn your knee line away from theirs, bringing your trapped knee out of the line of their hips.
  5. Pull the leg out knee first, foot last, and come up on top or to your feet.

Key details

  • The heel is what they want: hide it. Without the heel, the heel hook has no handle.
  • Knee first, then the foot: a knee trapped past their hips is what gives the lock its leverage.
  • Tap early: knees tear before pain.

Common mistakes

  • Standing up with the leg trapped. — They fall back into a heel hook. — Free the leg before you stand.
  • Lying flat. — You cannot reach their legs to clear them. — Sit up at once.
  • Spinning to escape. — A spin under a heel hook tears the knee. — Clear the knee line instead.

If they defend

  • They grab the heel. → Tap.
  • They go to the saddle. → Keep the heel hidden and push the top leg off.

How to drill it

Partner holds different leg entanglements without finishing, you escape, 6 reps each.

Safety

Tap as soon as the heel is caught and the knee turns.
