Tarikoplata
Chain finish · Closed Guard
A shoulder lock that is a kimura and an omoplata at once: the bent arm is driven up behind the back while your leg pins the shoulder. It comes when they bend the trapped arm in the omoplata and post to stay up. Keep your leg over the shoulder, thread your arm inside next to your leg and lock a kimura grip on the wrist, not the sleeve. Go belly down and trap the wrist against their side, with your leg if they pull it in, hold the far hip or belt so they cannot roll, then push the elbow toward the ceiling and the wrist up toward their head slowly. If they straighten the arm, go back to the omoplata; if they roll forward, follow with the omoplata sweep.
How to do it
- In the omoplata they bend the trapped arm and post to stay up; keep your leg over their shoulder so they cannot roll.
- Thread your arm inside, next to your leg, and lock a kimura grip on the bent arm, holding the wrist, not the sleeve.
- Bring your hips up toward their shoulder, pull your bottom leg out and kick it over the bent arm so their wrist is hooked behind your knee, heel to the ceiling; then let go of the kimura and grab your own thigh deep.
- Hold the far hip or belt and keep the leg heavy on the shoulder so they cannot roll forward.
- Turn your body toward their head — your knee goes down, their elbow goes up toward the ceiling — slowly, until the tap.
Key details
- It answers the bent arm in the omoplata: a kimura and an omoplata at once, with the shoulder pinned by your leg.
- Created by Tarik Hopstock; originally set up from bottom half guard.
- If they pull the arm in, go belly down and trap it with your leg.
- From belly down, grab their knee and step over the arm: they roll and you come on top to finish.
Common mistakes
- Letting them roll. — They roll forward and the lock is gone. — Hold the far hip or belt.
- Pulling the wrist out, not up. — Pulling to the side puts no pressure on the shoulder. — Pull up towards the head.
- Losing the wrist. — The sleeve slides, they straighten the arm and escape. — Grip the wrist, not the sleeve.
- Throwing the other leg far onto their back. — When they roll you are stuck under them and cannot come on top. — Keep that leg right behind their head, hold the pants to control the roll and step your foot to the mat so they fall beside it.
How to drill it
From omoplata, partner bends the arm, you fold it back, 6 slow reps each side.
Safety
A strong shoulder lock: lift slowly and release at the tap.
