Monoplata

Chain finish · Closed Guard

A shoulder lock between an armbar and an omoplata: the arm stays slightly bent and the shoulder locks, not the elbow. It comes when they drive forward into the omoplata and block it as your shin comes in front of their face. Pinch your knees around their arm first so it cannot slide out, post both palms on the mat away from them and use their forward pressure to switch your hips. Sit as for an armbar with their arm under your armpit, slide the bottom knee toward their elbow and lean back slowly over 5 to 7 seconds. If the arm straightens, the straight armbar is right there; if they roll forward, follow with the omoplata sweep. Apply very slowly and let them tap early.

How to do it

  1. In the omoplata they drive forward into you and block it as your shin comes in front of their face.
  2. Pinch your knees together around their arm before you move anything else, so the arm cannot slide out.
  3. Put both palms on the mat on the side away from them and use their forward pressure to move.
  4. Switch your hips and sit up as for an armbar, with their arm under your armpit.
  5. Slide the bottom knee toward their elbow and lean back slowly, over 5 to 7 seconds: the shoulder locks with the arm slightly bent.

Key details

  • It is a shoulder lock between an armbar and an omoplata, not an elbow lock: the arm stays slightly bent.
  • Their forward pressure is what lets you switch the hips.
  • Knees pinched the whole time: a gap lets the arm slide out.
  • If the arm straightens, the straight armbar is right there.

Common mistakes

  • Opening the knees during the hip switch. — The arm slides out and they posture. — Pinch the knees before you move the hips.
  • Fighting their forward pressure. — You waste the reaction that opens the monoplata. — Post the hands away and switch the hips with the pressure.
  • Leaning back fast. — The shoulder gives way before the tap. — Lean back over 5 to 7 seconds and stop at the tap.

How to drill it

From the omoplata, partner drives forward on a signal; you switch to the monoplata, 6 each side, very slowly.

Safety

A shoulder lock: apply it very slowly and let the partner tap early.
