Hitchhiker Escape

Escape · Closed Guard

Gets your arm out of an armbar from your back and brings you up on top of his guard. Turn your palm up, thumb pointing out of line with his hips, and in the same movement turn your hips away onto your side. If his ankles are crossed, walk your hips in toward his legs to bring the elbow down between them. Keep walking on your side around his head in one direction, all the way up to your knees, post a foot and turn your head around the corner of his hip. If the palm-up turn stalls, switch to palm down and push your hips into him to free the elbow: the two work together. Never rip the arm out; if pressure comes on the elbow, tap.

How to do it

  1. Turn your palm up so the thumb points out of line with their hips, and in the same movement turn your hips away onto your side.
  2. If their ankles are crossed, walk your hips in toward their legs to bring the elbow down between them, to the inside.
  3. Keep walking on your side around their head in the same direction, never turning back the other way.
  4. Walk all the way up to your knees, post a foot and turn your head around the corner of their hip.
  5. Come up on the other side of their guard with the elbow tight to your ribs.

Key details

  • Never leave the thumb lined up with their hips: palm up or palm down takes the pressure off the elbow.
  • Turn the palm and the hips in one movement.
  • Palm up and palm down work together: switch between them against their pressure until the elbow slips to the inside.

Common mistakes

  • Ripping the arm straight out. — They are stronger than the arm and finish the armbar. — Move the hips; in the palm-down version push your butt into them to free the elbow.
  • Getting away, then turning to the knees the other way. — The arm is pulled straight again the other way. — Keep walking on your side in one direction up to the knees.

How to drill it

Partner holds an armbar without breaking, you turn palm up and walk out, slowly, 6 reps each side.

Safety

Only against a hold, never against a lock already breaking: tap as soon as pressure comes on the elbow. Partner applies slowly.
