Hip Bump Sweep
Sweep · Closed Guard
A closed guard sweep from bottom to mount for the moment the opponent sits back and postures up, hands on your hips. Open the guard, plant both feet and sit up fast onto one palm behind you, head beside his. Reach your other arm over his shoulder and clamp his arm at the elbow to your side so he cannot post it. Push off the posted hand and the opposite foot, lift your hips and drive them diagonally into his chest, armpit into his shoulder, turning toward the trapped arm: he tips over that side and you land in mount. Sitting up onto the elbow or pushing straight back kills it. If he posts the hand, switch to the kimura; if he drops his head, the guillotine is there.
How to do it
- Wait for the moment they sit back and posture up; open the guard and put both feet on the mat.
- Sit up fast onto one palm behind you (the palm, not the elbow), chin tucked and head beside theirs, not low in front of them.
- Reach your other arm over the shoulder on that side and wrap their arm at the elbow, pulling it tight to your side so they cannot post with it.
- Push off the posted hand and the foot on the other side (the trapped-arm side), lift your hips off the mat and drive them diagonally into their chest, turning toward the trapped arm, your armpit pressing into their shoulder.
- They tip over the trapped side because that arm cannot post; roll with them and land in mount.
Key details
- It works best the moment they sit back: their weight is already moving away from you, so use their posture rather than fighting it.
- The trapped arm is the side they fall to; without the trap they post that hand and stop the roll.
- Sit up fast onto your palm, not the elbow: from the elbow you cannot lift the hips, and a slow sit-up gives them time to push you back.
- Your armpit drives into their shoulder: that contact is the lever that rotates their upper body.
- Lift and turn in one move, rotating them over the trapped arm; a push straight up or back runs into their base and does nothing.
- Get his hands off your body first: pummel inside or knock them to the mat, then sit up; while he holds you he simply pushes you back down.
- Cup the back of his elbow and glue his biceps to your side rather than wrapping all the way through; your knee on that side blocks him from posting wider.
Common mistakes
- Bumping straight up. — Straight up meets their base; they land back in your guard or on top of you. — Aim the hips diagonally, toward the trapped shoulder.
- Sitting up with the head low. — A low head in front of their chest is ready for a guillotine. — Sit up tall, chin tucked, head beside theirs.
- No arm trap. — They post the free hand on the mat and stop the roll. — Wrap the arm at the elbow first, then bump.
If they defend
- They lean forward into you. → The neck is right there: go to the guillotine or the kimura on the posting arm.
- They pull the arm free. → The kimura grip is often waiting: grab the wrist as it leaves.
How to drill it
The partner sits up in guard; you do sit-up, trap and bump, then return to guard and repeat. 3 rounds of 30 seconds.
