Guillotine Roll-Out

Escape · Closed Guard

A late guillotine escape that changes the angle with your whole body. Keep both hands on the choking arm and pull it down to ease the pressure. As he sits and throws a leg over your back, pitch onto your side before the leg hooks you, then move your legs away so you are perpendicular to him, not parallel, still pulling the arm and walking toward his head. His choking arm is committed and cannot prop him up: as he tries to come up, turn and come up in your own front headlock; if he rolls with you, land perpendicular and go behind him. Ending on the bottom is better than tapping.

How to do it

  1. Both hands on the choking arm: one on the forearm, the other hooking four fingers in, and pull it down to ease the pressure.
  2. As they sit and throw a leg over your back, pitch onto your side before the leg hooks you.
  3. Move your legs away so you turn from parallel to perpendicular to them, still pulling the arm down and walking toward their head.
  4. As they try to come up, turn and come up in your own front headlock; their choking arm cannot prop them up.
  5. If they roll with you, land perpendicular, wrap their back and go behind them.

Key details

  • Perpendicular, not parallel: the angle is what the guillotine needs, and the roll takes it away.
  • Keep pulling the arm down: it eases the choke and stops them using that elbow to come up.
  • Ending on the bottom is the price of a late escape and still far better than tapping.

Common mistakes

  • Staying square in front of them. — They fold your head forward and finish. — Pitch to your side and get perpendicular.
  • Letting go of the arm during the roll. — They post the elbow, come up and squeeze again. — Keep both hands on the arm until you are out.

How to drill it

Partner locks a loose guillotine and sits back; pitch to the side, roll out and come up in front headlock, 6 reps each side.

Safety

A locked guillotine chokes fast: if the squeeze is on, tap instead of rolling. Partner keeps the grip loose in drills.
